Coverage for Lost, Damaged, or Stolen Bags
Baggage insurance can reimburse you for items that are lost, stolen, or damaged on your trip. Baggage insurance is included as a part of Arch RoamRight travel protection plans.
What is baggage insurance?
Baggage insurance can consist of two types of baggage/luggage coverages:
- Lost baggage coverage, which can provide coverage to replace items in case your luggage is stolen or if a common carrier misplaces your luggage, and
- Baggage delay coverage, which can provide coverage to buy essential items you will need during your trip in the event your luggage is delayed beyond the time trigger as outlined in your travel insurance policy.
What Does Baggage Insurance Cover?
Baggage insurance, or luggage insurance, reimburses you for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal items. This coverage is for the duration of your entire trip, not just your flight. In addition to reimbursing you for your luggage and personal effects, luggage insurance can also assist and reimburse you for the application of a new passport if your passports are stolen. Baggage loss insurance that lasts for your entire journey is important, as airlines typically only provide limited protection for your checked baggage and do not cover your carry-on items. They may also exclude certain items, such as jewelry or sports equipment.
There will be a per article limit shown on your baggage insurance plan, along with a combined maximum limit for certain items, which may include the following:
- jewelry
- watches
- articles consisting in whole or in part of silver, gold or platinum
- furs
- articles trimmed with or made mostly of fur
- sporting equipment
- ski equipment
- personal computers, radios, cameras, camcorders and their accessories and related equipment and other electronic items
Baggage delay coverage (included in your baggage insurance plan) is for the outbound journey (not the return flight) and will reimburse you for the reasonable cost of purchasing additional clothing and personal items if your checked luggage is delayed or misdirected for more than the stated amount of time provided in your policy.
If you are traveling with anything highly valuable or expensive, it’s worth it to consider purchasing the appropriate level of baggage insurance. If needed, Arch RoamRight’s plans allow you to increase your level of baggage protection to ensure you get the coverage that meets your needs.

What To Do If Your Baggage is Lost, Damaged, or Delayed
If your baggage is lost, damaged, or delayed, you should take steps to prepare for filing your travel insurance claim.
If your baggage is lost, you should take inventory of the items that were lost with the luggage. Upon returning home, you can file a claim for lost luggage, but you will likely need receipts for the lost items, as well as receipts for replacement items that were essential on your trip.
If your baggage is damaged, you should take pictures immediately in order to document the extent of the damage.
If your baggage is delayed, you should understand the time trigger that is outlined in your travel insurance policy. Based on which Arch RoamRight travel insurance policy you purchased, your luggage will have to be delayed for the amount of time outlined in your policy before you are eligible for coverage. Once your luggage delay meets your policy’s qualification, you should start saving receipts for your purchases related to replacing essential items. At Arch RoamRight, you do not have to submit original receipts. Taking pictures of the receipts may be the easiest way to make sure you have a saved copy. But again, please refer to your policy for the full list of terms and conditions.
