About Rwanda
Driving through the Rwandan countryside you’ll see women walk with bundles on their heads and babies on their backs as children run barefoot, playing with makeshift toys. The faint smell of wood smoke fills the air and lush green hills fill the landscape
as far as the eye can see. Rwanda is quite possibly the prettiest and most underrated country in Africa and very much deserving of its nickname, the ‘land of a thousand hills’.
The capital Kigali is one of the most modern and well looked after capitals in the continent and this beautiful and clean country is a far cry from its troubled past and the tragic events of 1994. Now Rwanda is most famous as being one of the only places
in the world where you can see mountain gorillas in the wild.
The Virunga Mountains cover parts of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda and were the setting for the film ‘Gorillas in the Mist’, the true story of the life of conservationist, Dian Fossey. Visitors can follow in Dian’s footsteps and
trek through the mountains in the Volcanoes National Park to get up close with these beautiful creatures. The hour you spend with them is likely to be the most magical hour of your life.
One thing Rwanda doesn’t do is ignore history. Instead, Rwanda is unbelievably progressive, taking great measures to educate both nationals and visitors on the genocide that took place just over twenty years ago to help ensure that it doesn’t happen again.
A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre whilst heartbreaking, is a real eye opener and a must do for any visitors to the country. For travelers looking for something a little bit different, Rwanda is the ideal destination.
Take a look at some of the activities on offer in Rwanda:

- Try ugali, the staple East African food, often eaten with cabbage relish and meat or brochettes (goat kebabs).
