How To Sell Travel Insurance To Millennials

Published on Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Millennials are traveling, and they need travel insurance

Millennials are everywhere and businesses across pretty much every industry have had to alter their sales tactics to appeal to this new demographic. This generation of travelers is one of the fastest growing segments in the industry, making up a fifth of all global travelers. Millennials love to travel, have money to spend and, most importantly, make decisions in an entirely different manner than their predecessors.

While Millennials highly value experiences over things, and therefore love the appeal of travel, travel insurance can be a tough sell. Without truly knowing the value and importance of travel insurance, many Millennials object to the idea of paying extra money for a service they may not even use.

Here are some key points to consider when it comes to Millennials and travel insurance:

Stress the Value of Insurance for Millennials

As mentioned above, it's important for your clients to understand why travel insurance is important for them and their trip. There are a number of reasons that travel insurance can be particularly useful for this generation of travelers:

  • Millennials are more likely to visit challenging destinations in South America and other parts of the world where crime can be a major problem.
  • Millennials are more likely to travel with expensive computers and camera equipment that is vulnerable to damage or theft.
  • Millennials are more likely to engage in extreme sports and other behaviors that could result in injuries in need to treatment or evacuation (as covered by their specific policy).
  • Millennials truly value their time off and should protect their vacation investment from the risk of cancellation due to sickness, weather etc.
  • Insurance Should Fit Their Needs

It's important to make sure your client fully understands their policy, what is covered and how to use their insurance. You want to make sure everything is laid out for them so there are no surprises once they are out on the road. Among the important points to cover:

    • That the policy covers the part of the world they will be visiting. (RoamRight policies cover all countries and territories, with the exceptions of Afghanistan and Yemen.)
    • What sorts of items are covered by the policy. Computers? Cameras? iPhones? Up to what limit? (RoamRight plans can include additional baggage protection.)
    • That all activities they plan to partake in are covered. Will they be skiing? Skydiving? (RoamRight's hazardous sports upgrade covers these activities.)
    • They will also need to know the steps they need to take and paperwork they need to obtain to file a claim.

Travel Insurance is a Necessity, not an Up-sell

One common misconception about travel insurance is that it's simply a way to up-sell an already very expensive vacation. It's important to stress the true value of travel insurance as a way to protect and enhance a trip, rather than simply another add on.
