Backpacking Checklist

Brave the elements with RoamRight’s backpacking checklist. (Note:  Adjust accordingly based on the climate and the altitude of your destination).

Gear

• Backpack (between 40 and 90 liters) and waterproof backpack cover
• Tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag , sleeping bag stuff sack, and inflatable pillow
• Camping stove, stove fuel, cook pot, eating utensils, and small knife
• Headlamp and spare batteries
• Water filter and water bottles or hydration bladder
• Cat hole shovel
• Toilet paper and towels
• Compass, printed maps, cell phone, camera with spare batteries and memory cards or film
• Backpacking permit (check with the local ranger station to see if this is necessary)

Clothes

• Hiking shoes, boots and camp/water shoes
• Warm jacket (down or fleece) and gloves
• Fleece base layer shirt, pants and hat
• Sun hat and sunglasses
• Rain jacket and pants
• Socks and underwear

Medical and Safety Kit

• Band-Aids, ibuprofen, iodine, and antibiotic cream
• Sun screen and lip balm
• Lighter and waterproof matches
• Toothbrush and toothpaste
• 25 feet of lightweight rope (for hanging food, clotheslines and gear repair)
• Duct tape
• Thread and needle
• Biodegradable soap, hand sanitizer and sponge
