Kick off your summer with a bang by getting out of Dodge and checking out these family-friendly destinations. With Memorial Day looming around the corner, now is a good time to start planning your short jaunt out-of-doors. A three-day weekend of summertime fun? Count us in.
With gorgeous views of Lake Champlain and a friendly college-town vibe, Burlington is an underrated New England getaway. Pedestrian-friendly Church Street Marketplace offers up loads of window-shopping at local small businesses, along with restaurants all boasting their commitment to the state’s farmers and communities. Simultaneously peaceful and bustling, Burlington is as charming a getaway as you can ask for.
While the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple may not suit everyone’s fancy, it’s a city that does Memorial Day right. Visit any number of street festivals scattered throughout Manhattan, or get your patriot on by visiting the U.S.S Intrepid for film screenings, tours or the popular Memorial Day commemorations on the ship’s deck.
Sometimes it seems San Diego gets short shrift from it’s more popular sisters San Francisco and Los Angeles, but this oceanside metropolis has charms of its own. Over the long weekend, try to squeeze in a picnic at Balboa Park, the nation’s largest urban park. While you’re at it, explore the park by bike, or stop in any of the 15 major museums, like the Japanese Friendship Garden or San Diego Automotive Museum. There’s literally something for everyone.
Get outside during the long weekend by heading to Austin, Texas. The Lone Star State’s capital city, it offers not only modern, urban trappings and some of the best tacos in the country, but it’s also a short-trip out to Texas Hill Country. Memorial Day marks the height of the busy season, with loads of city folk heading out to Lake Travis to boat, float and waterski.
Nothing marks the beginning of the summer season quite like barbecue, and man, does St. Louis got it. The Midwestern city, a short haul from Chicago or Kansas City, goes all out with its Bluesweek Festival, held at the Chesterfield Amphitheater on Memorial Day weekend. While you take in local blues acts, you can also chow down on grub from the Bunge BBQ Blast, co-sponsored in part by the St. Louis BBQ Society.

Your bag when backpacking is heavy enough. Here's how travel insurance can help take some weight off your shoulders.
Raised in Southern California, Joseph left the temperate climes of the OC for the chilly winters of Chicago, where he earned his degree in magazine journalism. Along the way, he developed an impenetrable layer of blubber, thanks to the city's deep dish pizza and hot dogs. In recent years, he has edited an online travel magazine, helped produce two international TBEX conferences, and has written about fashion, food, wine, and travel for various online publications. Currently, Joseph is Assistant Editor at Wine Enthusiast Magazine, where he geeks out on his interests regularly. Read Joseph's blog at Pith + Moment or follow him on Twitter.
