Where To Go In the Dominican Republic?

Sunshine, waving palms, sandy beaches and a pinch of Merengue music and you have the perfect recipe for a relaxing beach vacation in the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic has it all and then some.

Punta Cana

If you dream of powder white sandy beaches and turquoise sea, head towards Punta Cana in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic. Here you can enjoy lounging on a beach chair while relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

Must Do: Saona
Make sure to plan a day trip to the spectacular island Saona. I would recommend boarding a catamaran, making a stop at a natural swimming pool along the way and have a BBQ lunch on the island.

Puerto Plata

The sandy beaches may be less white, but the locals here are very friendly and make you feel right at home. That was enough for me to return on several occasions. You can participate in several water activities like parasailing, banana boat rides and snorkeling.

Must Do: Sosua
Go to nearby Sosua Beach for some snorkeling.

Samana

Samana is located in the northeastern part of the Dominican Republic and has a beautiful scenic bay. If you are here at the right time, namely from January to March, you will be able to go whale watching. Many humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of the Dominican Republic to mate and give birth with Samana Bay as one of their favorite locations.

Must Do: National Park Los Haitises
The National Park is known for one of the most important rainforests and mangrove reserves in the entire Caribbean. Seeing the fauna and flora is truly amazing. You will be able to watch birds in their natural habitat and rare cave drawings offer a glimpse into the life of the indigenous people who lived here.

Another Tip: Cayo Levantado
Cayo Levantado is a very small island of only one square kilometer located in the south of Samana Bay. This day trip is only when you like relaxing at a beach, because let`s be honest on a small island like this there isn`t much else to do. But for the beach lover among us, it is a little slice of heaven.

La Romana

La Romana is the third-largest city in the Dominican Republic and close to the country’s capital, Santa Domingo. Even though it is a large city, on an island you are always close to beaches. Not far from La Romana you will find the beaches of Bayahibe and Dominicus.

Must Do: Santa Domingo
A visit to the capital of the Dominican Republic, the city that was founded by Columbus in 1496, should also be on your list if you enjoy culture and history.

La Romana is also close to the island of Saona if you prefer a beach getaway.

As you can see there are lots of things to experience on this island. Make sure you do some research first of the sights you want to visit during your trip in the Dominican Republic before you decide where you book your hotel. This way you will avoid long bus or car trips to get to places as the roads in this country aren`t like we know them.
