If you’ve spent any amount of time in New York City lately, you may have noticed the signs emblazoned on subway platforms, buses and train cars imploring you to “get outta town.” The slogan comes from New York State’s official tourism board, which has been using the cheeky phrasing as a way to highlight the rest of the state’s cultural offerings. While New York City is the big jewel in the Empire State’s crown, it wouldn’t hurt to heed the advice of the Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office and explore the hotspots just outside city limits.
Located in the Hudson Valley, Storm King Art Center in New Windsor is located just one hour outside of the city. Wandering over an expanse of 500 acres, you can experience more than 100 carefully curated large-scale sculptures by some of the world’s most acclaimed artists.
Escape bustling New York City with a trip to the Ananda Ashram, located in the foothills of the Catskills. Easily accessible by car, bus and train, this yoga retreat and educational center offers daily classes as well as weekend workshops and retreats, for harried city-dwellers and practicing visitors alike.
Set out for a hike in the shadows of the Shawangunk Mountain Range (affectionately dubbed “the Gunks” by locals). Thirty-five miles of carriageways and miles upon miles of footpaths at the Minnewaska State Park Preserve make for an ideal setting for walking, biking and hiking, while visitors can also rock climb, scuba dive or cross-country ski, depending on the season.
Alongside Long Island’s North Fork region, the Finger Lakes region is New York’s lauded wine country. Scenic lakes carved by ancient, long-gone glaciers dot the landscape, perfect for a long drive or afternoon picnic. While wine tasting is an enjoyed activity, visit Traders Village in Romulus for furniture built by Amish craftsmen or the National Women’s Hall of Fame in historic Seneca Falls for a slow-going day trip.
Head up 59 miles north of the city to this contemporary art haven in Beacon, NY. Housed in a former Nabisco factory, the 300,000 square foot space hosts public tours and gallery talks amidst numerous galleries housing works from international artists.

Your bag when backpacking is heavy enough. Here's how travel insurance can help take some weight off your shoulders.
Raised in Southern California, Joseph left the temperate climes of the OC for the chilly winters of Chicago, where he earned his degree in magazine journalism. Along the way, he developed an impenetrable layer of blubber, thanks to the city's deep dish pizza and hot dogs. In recent years, he has edited an online travel magazine, helped produce two international TBEX conferences, and has written about fashion, food, wine, and travel for various online publications. Currently, Joseph is Assistant Editor at Wine Enthusiast Magazine, where he geeks out on his interests regularly. Read Joseph's blog at Pith + Moment or follow him on Twitter.
