Amazing Places To Hop On A Boat

Whether it is through island hopping or sailing, some coastal countries present their natural beauty best when you look at them from off land from a boat.

There are over 150 countries around the world that give you the opportunity to enjoy their coastline and the sea, but these four countries are amazing destinations where you cannot miss getting on the water to see some of their best features.  

Belize

Having the second largest barrier reef in the world, Belize has more than 200 islands or “cayes.”

Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye might be the most well known islands, but beyond them you can enjoy the pristine and almost deserted beaches and the island life of Tobacco Caye, South Water Caye, Laughingbird Caye, Silk Caye, and many more. Some of these cayes are quite remote, requiring up to three hours on a speed boat to reach them, which makes for a great and scenic boat ride or an excellent sailing trip – if you wish to go slower.

In case you’re wondering, the fishing and scuba diving experience in Belize is second to none. Hey, what can you expect from a country that boasts such a rich barrier reef?

Thailand

Thailand is extremely popular among budget travelers and island hoppers. Getting on a boat in Thailand is extremely easy, but what’s not so easy is picking the best places to go since there are so many and most of them are gorgeous!

Whether it is on a long tail boat (traditional Thai boat), a ferry, or a sailing boat, there are a few islands you should visit as a main base, and from there head out onto the sea or smaller islands. This short list will help you narrow it down a bit. 

• Koh Chang, from which you can jump to Koh Mak, Koh Kood, and Koh Wai;
• Koh Samui, from which you can jump to Koh Phan Ngan, Koh Tao, and Koh Nang Yuan;
• and Phuket or Krabi (not an island, though), from which you can jump to Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, and Koh Yao Yai.

These islands have some of the most impressive crystal blue waters, rich corals, and impressive landscapes that will make you feel like you are in paradise. And in case you’re wondering what Koh is, it means “island”.

The best chance for sunshine on the west coast (Andaman Sea) is between November to April; and on the east coast (Gulf of Thailand) is from January to September.

Greece

Greece is a gorgeous country overall, but in my opinion Greece is best enjoyed through its islands. Athens might have the rich capital history, but the real soul of Greece lies in its islands and their individual cultures.

As you may know, some of Greece’s islands are world renowned for their breathtaking beaches. You can hop on a boat of any size – from cruises, to ferries and even small sailboats – to see the different islands and how mildly or dramatically some of them contrast the others in terms of lifestyle and culture.

If you’re into sailing, the winds are great in this part of the Mediterranean, especially if you visit during the hot summer months. In case you don’t know where to go between the over 1,000 islands, don’t miss Mykonos and Santorini – which some say has “the best sunsets in the world.” 

Australia

Australia is best known for its outback, its inland tourist attractions, the Sydney Opera House, and the Great Barrier Reef.  But, did you know that Australia is also a great destination to go sailing? The winds and water conditions are great for watersport aficionados, and when you add the Great Barrier Reef to it, there’s no better way to get closer to the rich, colorful, and magnificent sea life. 

You can sail along the coast or go deep into the reef to snorkel or dive around some of the most beautiful and colorful corals and marine life found in this world. But if you rather stay on the surface, sailing can be one of the most relaxing ways to explore this side of Australia.
