In a city seething with history, it is no wonder that a vibrant art scene in Berlin has popped up. Overcoming a violent and devastating past, buildings, walls, and museums are packed to the brim with colorful art that makes Berlin pop with personality. If you happen to be in Berlin, make sure to head to these great areas to get your art on.
What started out as an old spy station for the National Security Agency (NSA) during the 1960s turned into an abandoned paradise for international names in the street art and graffiti scene. This privately owned piece of land does take a bit of meandering to get to, however the hike is worth it. When you arrive to the front gate a couple of private security guards will take you around the property showcasing some amazing pieces of artwork that cannot be seen anywhere else. This open-air gallery does require a “donation” and the guards will let you know how much to pay. Expect to spend anywhere from €7-12.
Probably the most iconic part of Berlin, people flock from all parts of the globe to see the Berlin Wall. Now transformed into one of the world’s biggest free open air galleries, the East Side Gallerycontains over 100 different artists that have decorated the walls with original street art. Located in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg it contains 1.3km of free art. Take your time and enjoy this little piece of history!
In 2011, 40 galleries revitalized this smaller neighborhood and local businesses and markets have turned it into an art hotspot. From modern to contemporary, small boutique galleries to big international names, you can find all kinds of art and fashion here. Some of the most popular galleries include The Arndt Gallery, The Klosterfelde Gallery, and the Loock Gallery.
