I have had my fair bit of island hopping in the Caribbean, mostly aboard a cruise ship which makes several stops each trip. That's what I like about cruising, it gives you the opportunity to get a first impression of a destination, a bit like a teaser. This way you can always go back for a longer visit.
Here are a few of my top picks for places to visit in the Caribbean.
St. Lucia has it all: lush green, beautiful beaches and lots of things to do. Take a catamaran trip for a scenic tour around the island and see the two volcanic peaks known as the Pitons. Or go to Sulphur Springs, the world's only drive-in volcano. Maybe you're a chocoholic like me and you would like to try this unique ‘tree-to-bar’ experience where you start with a visit at a plantation, pick out your cacao plant and make it into your own chocolate bar.
I've been to the Dominican Republic on many occasions because the island has such a great vibe to it. The friendly people make you feel right at home, combine that with sunny weather, gorgeous beaches and some Merengue music and you will be convinced that you’ve entered paradise. Besides being famous for its reggae music, which by the way instantly puts anyone into a good mood, Jamaica also has gorgeous botanical gardens and a national treasure called Dunn's River Falls. It's one of their biggest tourist attractions and I enjoyed climbing it. I remember the shockingly refreshing water and the fact you're holding hands creating a human chain makes for a special experience.
When I was island hopping in St Vincent and the Grenadines it quickly became clear to me that Bequia was my favorite island. It oozes a certain charm and has such a relaxed atmosphere, not to mention the gorgeous beaches. Arriving into Port Elizabeth is a treat on its own as you're welcomed by colorful boats in the harbor. Make sure you also pay a visit to the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary where you can witness sea turtles up close and have an educational experience at the same time.
